Our Story

Born from the Sea

What started as a handful of skippers swapping stories at the slipway has grown into a community hub for anglers, families, and ocean lovers. YBAC's history is tied to the great snoek runs that sweep the coast each winter — events that are as much part of local identity as the tides themselves .

Extras We Offer

Facilities on Hand

Ski-boats launch at the local harbour which is managed by the Swartland municipality. The harbour consists of two spacious slipways. When a snoek run is experienced up to 140 boats are sometimes launched during the early hours of the morning. The breakwater has recently been upgraded to further improve launch conditions.

A fish market at the town entrance is available to facilitate all trading activities for the commercial fishing boats, and is equipped to accomodate all boat-cleaning and parking requirements. Entry for recreational users is included in the harbour tariff.

Fuel and lubricants are available at the local petrol garage from 07h00 till 20h00. Bait in the form of frozen pilchards, Japanese pike and white mussels are readily available from the local traders. Tackle is also available from most of the local stores.

Accommodation is available in many forms ranging in price. The popular municipal caravan and camping park is very clean and neat and situated adjacent to the famous 16mile beach. There is also the Strandkombuis which is ideal for boat anglers as it comprises 53 chalets with plenty of space to park boat trailers and vehicles. Then there are the private houses, as well as various bed and breakfasts to cater for the visitor's specific needs. Further accommodation details are also available on the link on the home page on this site.

Favourite Spots

Responsible Fishing

We promote sustainable practices: obeying bag limits, respecting closed seasons, and releasing bycatch to conserve stocks.

  • Dassen Island — 9 km offshore, home to penguins and prime yellowtail grounds .

  • Vondeling Point — a reefy stretch that produces snoek and linefish.

  • Snoek Grounds — just west of the harbour, where the winter snoek run delivers hauls remembered for a lifetime.

The area around Dassen Island has many blinders and submerged reefs. In particular, the areas to the South, South West and West of the island. Extreme caution should be exercised at all times.

NSRI Station 34 Yzerfontein NSRI Station 34 is now finally equipped and ready to Save Lives!

It has been just over three years since the station was started, and they now boast 2 fully qualified coxwains and 3 trainee coxwains. The station was started with only one rescue craft, Lady Coutts, a 4,2m rubber duck and with the help of Rotary Clubs of Table Bay, have recently received their brand new 7,3m RIB, appropriately named Rotary Onwards, which is equipped for speed and endurance. Rotary Onwards can run for 20 hours day or night, search in heavy mist or operate in darkness as her total equipment list includes a 24Nm radar.

Operations to Date

Getting NSRI Station 34 off the ground was definitely the right thing to do, as recent statistics show their effectiveness to date:

  • Whales saved to date: 3

The Station has also recently received the 'green light' for the construction of their new NSRI Base building, which will be located in the harbour area.
